Foot and Cycle Ferry

The Harbour Commissioners operate a Foot and Cycle Ferry between Brightlingsea, Point Clear (St. Osyth) and East Mersea from Easter to the end of October.

The Ferry: • Is licenced to carry a maximum of 12 passengers • Can carry dogs, bicycles, pushchairs etc. • Has a landing ramp giving disabled access to the jetty and the beaches. The beaches are shingle and are suitable for walkers but may present problems for others. • Operates between the end of the Public Jetty at Brightlingsea, East Mersea Stone and a stone jetty at St. Osyth Stone, Point Clear. The nearest vehicular access to the landing points are:- • Brightlingsea 100 metres • Pt. Clear 200 metres  • E. Mersea 1 mile

Assembly Points at East Mersea Stone and St. Osyth Stone are signposted
At St. Osyth Stone landing points depend of the height of tide and may be inaccessible on very high tides.
At East Mersea there are steps on the sea wall which have to be used and the path near the sea wall may be submerged on very high tides.

Dial a Ferry
This service operates during periods when there is not enough demand for a regular ferry service.
The ferry can be book for a crossing on any of the normal routes during daily operating times.
The booking must be made by telephone on 01206 302200 before 1pm on the day of travel and please give a minimum of 1 hours notice.

Other services provided by the ferry
During quiet periods short harbour trips may be available. Please enquire at Harbour Office or ask Ferry Crew for availability.

Private Hire (with coxswain)
Outside normal daily operating times the ferry is available for private hire. Ask at the Harbour Office for details.

Ferry Timetable 2008 - Seasonal Operating Times

Daily operating times:

10.00 – 12.30 and 13.00 – 17.30
NB There will be no service between 12.30 and 13.00 daily

Scheduled service:

Brightlingsea – Point Clear – Brightlingsea
On demand (crossing time 3 minutes) except during the following times when the ferry is crossing to East Mersea:

11.00 – 11.30
12.30 – 13.00 (lunch break)
13.30 – 14.00
16.00 – 16.30

Brightlingsea – East Mersea – Brightlingsea
Three scheduled crossings each day, although additional crossings will be provided at busy times. Last trip to East Mersea 16.00. Scheduled trips will run as follows:

Depart from Brightlingsea at 11.00, 13.00 & 16.00
Depart from East Mersea at 11.15, 13.45 & 16.15
